Downeast Bicycle Specialists was started in 1982 by Dave Kinsman and Steve Pucci as a part time business. Beginning with a few boxes of bike parts in a chicken coop heated by a wood stove, a one page price sheet, and inventory kept in a notebook, Downeast grew steadily over the next 17 years by providing New England dealers with superior customer service. In 1999 Downeast was acquired by Doug Moore, an active cyclist with extensive business experience in the hardware industry. In 2010 long-time Downeast employee and Operations Manager Jeff Cavicchi purchased a share of the business, and together he and Doug ran the company until 2013. In 2013 Doug and Jeff sold the business to fellow distributor The Hans Johnsen Company. Founded in 1901 and located in Dallas, Texas, HJC, a family-owned organization, has been serving U.S. bicycle retailers for over 100 years. Under HJC Downeast continues to operate as a separate distributor under its own name, with its own catalog and website. The Hans Johnsen Company also owns and operates west coast distributor Wilson Bicycle Sales, located in Hayward, CA.
Upon the sale of Downeast Doug retired, and Jeff took over the twin roles of General Manager and Chief Operating Officer.
In 2002 the National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) rated bicycle parts and accessory distributors throughout the country. Criteria included availability/timeliness, accuracy of order, warranty service, sales rep support, loyalty to IBD's, profitability to store, marketing support and depth of product line. Out of 21 national and regional distributors, Downeast had the highest average score. Check out the complete results at the NBDA's web site, www.nbda.com. We are proud of this achievement and are dedicated to continuing our focus on outstanding customer service to the independent bicycle dealer.
